Hartland is a tiny rural settlement in Ward County, about 25 miles northwest of Minot. We were on our way back to Fargo from Williston on a two day trip to explore a few places and we visited Hartland to see what we could see. Unfortunately, much of what remains of Hartland is now fenced and posted “no trespassing,” so we were unable to get closer to the two abandoned homes shown here. We saw one inhabited home on the site of Hartland, too.

Ghosts of North Dakota 
My mother’s name was Agnes Hanson, Her parents had a farm outside of hartland and then moved into town. My mother used to take us kids there to viist our grandparents and at that time there was a store and a bar that I remember

I forgot to add that my when my mother was in high school she played girl’s basketball for Hartland (and heard from a friend of hers, that played BB for Tagus high school, that she was rough! she graduated from Harland high school in the late 20’s! I also remember when we went to hartland we played with the stockdill girls, their parents owned the store. My mother married my dad Tom Stredwick and they lived around Berthold farmed and then bought a bar which they owned for about 50 years. I have good memories of having a good time when went to hartland.

I grew up right by Hartland, about 3.5 miles from it. I graduated in 2001 and moved away. Our neighbor Selmer Norgard was one of the few still living in Hartland, though he passed away since then.

My parents were Percy and Jerry Stockdill , they owned the Grocary store and post office in Hartland. I attended 1st grade through the 8th grade at the Hartland grade school .When the school was closed we were bused to Berthold for two years until my Parents had the store building moved to Berthold and remodeled to be are home. My parents lived there till illness caused them to leave. The bar across the street from the store in Hartland was moved to Lostwood ND. Some of my fondest memories of growing up were in Hartland area and I am still in close contact with some classmates and Friends from there

I visited Hartland with Selmer Norgard, my grandmother Pearl’s first cousin. He told me that those two houses belonged to the town doctor and the town banker. Hartland’s bank closed after the crash of 1929. Selmer had fond memories of living in Hartland.

My husband and I currently own and live in the Stockdill house that was moved to Berthold. We had heard that it was a store in Hartland before it was moved to here. We were looking through the house records to find more about the story and when it was built and moved. So interesting to read this thread and learn more about the people who lived here and loved it as much as we do.

The second picture on this sight is a view of the back of my grand parents house (Selmer and Caroline Hovland). They purchased it in 1935 for $800 cash. It was considered an older house at the time. My father (Curt Hovland) was born in that house in 1935. His father ran the Hartland store from 1925-1946.
In 1942 the store burned to the ground. Selmer replaced the building by moving an older store from Foxholm to Hartland. In 1946 the family moved to Canby, Oregon.

Robert, I was excited to find this post from you. My daughter married into the ‘Kolloen’ family. Her husband is a great-grandson of Peter Kolloen and Sophie Lewis Kolloen, Melva was his grandmother. They would like to visit the area and see where the family farm was in Hartland. Is the cemetery still accessible? Any answers would be very welcome.

Yes – both cemeteries are accessible still. I help mow the Hillside cemetery and my grandparents are buried at the other one.

The brown colored house was where my great-grandma lived with her second husband. Their names were John and Elizabeth Tummerdahl. I’m sure it was a beautiful house in its day!
